Imbolc Bath Spell/Ritual for Brigid

Imbolc Bath Spell Description

This Imbolc spell is very adaptable and centers on ritual bathing, healing magic, and working with Brigid at her sacred well. It can be done over three nights or in one night, and the focus can be shifted to suit your needs.

It also helps us remember we are strong and powerful and helps build resilience

This is a slightly more advanced spell just because it has lots of supplies. It really is a bit more of a ritual. Feel free to simplify and just do the parts that are right for you. You can also make it easier by doing it all in one night instead of over three nights.  You are less likely to do the spell if it’s too complicated.

The purpose is to temporarily turn your bath or hot tub into Brigid’s healing well and invoke Brigid’s powers of poetry (magical writing), smithcraft (the power of creating with skill and precision), and healing into your life. You can also use a shower, although that is not ideal. The power of three features strongly in this spell and is part of what fuels it.

This Imbolc spell is best done between January 31 and February 2, but it can be done until mid-February.

When is Imbolc/Candlemas?

In modern calendars, it is usually on February 1. On some calendars, Candlemas (the Catholic version that tried to replace Imbolc) is on the first, and Imbolc is on February 2. Celts, like many others, followed a lunisolar calendar. So historically, it may have fallen on the full moon. Some people celebrate at the solar midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. And FYI, the fire of Imbolc can fuel magic and resistance.

Supplies for the Imbolc Bath Spell

If you want to keep it simple, the essentials are the herb tea for the bath and the candles. You can skip everything else. There is a checklist at the end and a checklist for spell steps.

Candles

  • Three unused candles, one yellow, one red, one green, with holders

  • They can also be all white or all yellow beeswax if that is what you have

  • Or use what your intuition tells you to use

  • Tapers work well if doing this over three nights

  • Tealights work well if doing this in one night

  • Matches or lighter

Bath Tea

  • A cup or more each of dried Rosemary, Lavender, and Calendula if you can get it

  • Using just Rosemary and Lavender is fine

  • A strainer

  • A glass jar, one gallon if you have one

  • A plastic pitcher or jug

  • A pot for boiling water

  • A few large clean towels

  • Loose clothing for after

This is amazing for your skin and nervous system. I would do it every day if I could. You can also substitute salt, but I highly recommend the herbs.

Optional Imbolc Incense Blend

  • A spoonful of Rosemary for clearing, mental focus, and to represent the power of poetry

  • A spoonful of Cinnamon bark broken into pieces, or a half spoon of cinnamon powder, to spark the magic, honor Brigid, and represent fire and smithcraft

  • A spoonful of Angelica leaf or root powder to call on celestial and overworld forces and the power of healing

  • Heatproof container

  • Charcoal

  • Matches

  • Small spoon

Assemble this before the moon is full. Hold the uses in your mind and speak them to the herbs. Or use any incense that feels right to you.

Optional Steam for the House

  • Three spoonfuls of Pine needles, broken up

  • You can often find these on the ground under trees, just wash before using

  • Three spoonfuls of Rosemary leaves

  • Three Cinnamon sticks

Optional Brigid’s Altar

  • Red altar cloth, or substitute green or white

  • A special pen or journal for eloquence

  • A knife for skill

  • A clear glass bowl with water collected outside for healing and to represent Brigid’s well

Or whatever your intuition tells you to create.

Preparing for the Imbolc Spell

Journal or contemplate what needs healing in your life, where you need more skills, and where you would like to be more eloquent. If you are a beginner, maybe just pick one of these to focus on.

Write a simple sentence that describes your need or purpose. Use terms like “I ask for.” Start your sentence with something like “By the power of Brigid.” Be sure to include some gratitude. You can also just speak from your heart during the spell instead of writing.

You might want to try writing a longer version if you are more advanced.

Gather your supplies. A printed-out copy of this might be helpful, or notes for yourself.

Imbolc Bath Spell Instructions – One Night Version

Place all the tea herbs in the glass container and add the Rosemary, Lavender, and Calendula. Boil water and pour it over the herbs. Cover and let sit for at least a half hour. Strain, then place the liquid in a plastic pitcher or jug. Glass and baths don’t mix well.

Optional Steam Instructions

  • Set the steam herbs in a pot with at least two quarts of water

  • Bring to a simmer, then turn it down to the lowest possible setting

  • Take the lid off

This blesses and clears your house and helps you prepare.

  • Set up Brigid’s altar, in the bath area if you can

  • Breathe and center yourself

  • Feel how the earth and sky surround and protect you

  • Draw the bath

  • If you are advanced, you can cast and call

  • Place your candles in the bathing area

  • Read the simple sentence you created or speak from your heart about what you are asking for

  • Light the yellow candle and say something like, “I light Brigid’s candle of poetry.”

  • Light the red candle and say something like, “I light Brigid’s candle of smithcraft.”

  • Light the green candle and say something like, “I light Brigid’s candle of healing.”

If you are focusing on just one quality, light all three and then say something like, “I light Brigid’s candles for (______).”

  • Optional incense step, light your charcoal and make an offering of the incense

  • You can add more with a spoon if you like throughout the bath

  • You can say something like “Brigid, you are honored and welcome” if you choose and are comfortable working with deity

Turning Your Bath into Brigid’s Well

Imagine or visualize a magical steaming pool of water. It can be in the wilds or in a beautiful sacred building. Let that picture take shape in your mind. Then, while holding that image, feel or imagine it moving into your bath or shower through an out-breath or down your hands, turning it into Brigid’s healing well for the night.

Say out loud, “By the power of three times three, as I will it, so mote it be.”

  • Pour the tea into the bath, or have it nearby if you are showering

  • Clear your thoughts and step into the bath or shower

Soaking in Brigid’s Well ~ Ritual Bathing Part

For the first part of your bath, focus on releasing, letting the Rosemary clear away anything you don’t need.

For the second part of the bath, focus on calming, allowing the Lavender to open you to what is needed.

For the third part, focus on healing and ask the Calendula to strengthen your body and spirit.

Or just enjoy the bath, trusting the herbs to do their work.

To adapt this to a shower, pour the herb tea over you in three parts. The final pouring should be after you turn the water off.

When you are done, step out of the bath or shower onto a towel and let the water dry on your skin. Maybe sit and journal while this happens. If it’s too cold to do that, gently pat some of the water off and put on loose clothes.

Let the candles burn completely out in a safe place if you are doing this for one night only. Hold the intention of the circle opening once the candles are out.

Adapting This Spell into a Three Night Imbolc Ritual

Divide the tea herbs and the optional incense into three parts and use one part each night. The optional steam can be used for all three nights, adding more water as needed.

Light one candle each night and focus on the qualities of that candle. Snuff the candle at the end rather than blowing it out and relight it the next night. On the third night, let the candle burn completely out.

Then have a lovely snack. Sheep cheese, like feta, and hazelnuts in some form are associated with Brigid.
