Types of Witchcraft: Different Paths, Practices, and Magical Skills
Today I want to share the various possibilities and types of magic that can be part of your craft as a witch. You may even decide to pick one of these to specialize in. Or you might combine some or all of these in your practice. I want to share this as inspiration to explore beyond the lines of what you think being a witch is. After all, isn’t witchcraft about moving beyond the normal boundaries of life?
Do You Need a Witchcraft Label?
When I was a younger witch, it wasn’t common to label yourself. Except maybe as part of a tradition like Wicca, Gardnerianism, etc. Now it’s very common. Guess what, you don’t need a label. You can have one if you want. Maybe you have a strong calling to a particular path and you want to focus on that. If you are just starting, maybe some kind of label might help you focus your learning and do research. But whether you call yourself by that label is up to you. I usually tell people to explore for a while rather than label. But that’s a personal choice.
People all around the world have their own terms for what style of Witchcraft they use, or for what they call witches and witchcraft, so this is not meant to be an exclusive list. A few of these I have whole articles on, and I’ll link those.
Green Witchcraft and Plant Magic
The first one I want to talk about is being a green witch, and a green witch is someone who works with the magic of plants, medicinal herbs, and maybe as a healer.
They might develop skills in plant communication, focus on making tinctures, essences, ointments, and oils, or both. They might use plants as a primary way to layer magic into spells and charms. Did you spend your childhood smooshing up plants and trying to plaster them on your siblings? Did you have special names for plants and trees? Or did your interest in working with plants show up in a different way?
Kitchen Witchcraft and Hearth Magic
Another type of witch that you might be familiar with is kitchen witch. That’s a term that is applied to people who exhibit their magic through the creation of foods. Kitchen witchery can look as simple as charging beverages with intentions, or it can look like turning a dinner table into an altar where everything on it is charged with an intention.
Hearth witch is someone who works primarily through the magic of their daily life in their home. They may put magic into all the small details of their life, be very in tune with house spirits. That can look like working literally with your hearth, aka fireplace, if you have one. Or creating an altar as a hearth and seeing your home as a container for your witchcraft.

Hedge Witchcraft and Folk Magic
Let’s talk about being a hedge witch. When I was much younger, that was kind of a slightly derogatory term used by people who did more ceremonial or occult-style magic, mostly to kind of denigrate the more common forms of household or food or herbal magic. That was not the case, obviously, for all ceremonial magicians.
These days, it’s used for witches who travel psychically to other realities. They move seamlessly between the mundane details of daily life and daily magic into what is beyond the hedge, what is unknown. I also like it as an archaic term to honor our folk magic ancestors who lived just beyond the boundaries of the village, and who shared magical help, support, and advice.

Elemental Witchcraft
Elemental witches are people who work through the power of the elements to draw magic in and to send it out into the physical world to make it real. And they will pick which element they’re working with based on the type of magic they’re doing. It’s also very common for elemental witches to be strongest in one particular element and maybe have less of a relationship with others
Psychic Witchcraft
This isn’t as much a common label as a talent or skill you might have. We all have intuitive skills that can be expanded and developed. Some people have a lot of ability, but we all have some, and we can all develop more with practice or training. I think of intuitive skills as varied and on a continuum, with a lot of subsets.
Psychic skills are all about getting information using any of your senses. They often read people or sense energy in a place or in a room. Some specialize in getting messages from the spirit world, some focus on the living and earthly places. Here’s a couple of examples.
Divination and Pattern Finding
Some witches have a skill for divination, and I think of this as a witch who uses any tool to get information, whether that’s tarot cards, oracle cards, dice, or throwing bones or seeing signs or omens. And there is a subset of that I call pattern finders. A lot of people who are good at divination are really good pattern finders. They can see the underlying pattern that connects all these seemingly random things into one message.
Oracle Witchcraft
An older subset is the oracle. Historically, they were people who brought through messages or prophecy, usually from a Deity. Often at a sacred site like a spring or temple. Often in a trance-like state. The word oracle comes from a Latin root meaning to speak or pray.
Sometimes they were dedicated to a specific Deity. You can also choose to see this term more broadly as someone who brings through info from many different types of spirits. People might refer to this as channeling, or aspecting. Some witches specialize in seeing and working with a certain type of being. Others do not. They see them all. And often that work involves assisting those beings, having them assist you, or calling on them to empower your magic, or to call on them to get information to others. Often, this is a talent that shows up very early.
Being a Medium
The medium is someone who works with bringing through messages from any spirit, but especially those who’ve passed. Like the oracle, this might be done in a trance or semi-trance-like state. There is a long history of this, but in modern times it reemerged strongly during the Victorian era. Séances were very widespread during this time, and the Ouija board was developed.
Occult Witchcraft and Magical Correspondences
Are you someone who loves systems and categories? Some witches describe themselves as occultists. They may work in a more formal or ceremonial way. They may include astrology, the magic of the days of the week, and time their workings to coincide with planetary hours, and work a lot with various affinities to make sure that their magic is the most powerful and potent. They often, but not always, have set ritual wording that is used magically to summon, invoke, and devoke beings.
Magical Talents and Skills
These categories are about skills that a witch incorporates into their practice or specializes in. They require time to develop. And they aren’t usually the first place a witch starts. But in witchcraft, anything can happen.
Witches of Birth, Death, and Transition
This is a witch who has an affinity for holding the gates of birth and death, which are in fact the same gate. They often find themselves in the mundane world holding down jobs as midwives, doulas, hospice workers, people that work in that profession of helping to assist people through into this world or out of this life.
Crossroads Witchcraft and Magic
Another type of witch is the crossroads witch, which is someone who stands at the place where different options meet, at the liminal gates of reality, and does magic there to create change, whether that’s personal change or cultural change.
Underworld Witchcraft
Another way of being a witch, or another type of energy that you might have an affinity for, is working with the underworld. Sometimes people associate that with ancestor work. Some people associate it with baneful workings.
Solar Witchcraft and Sun Magic
Some people are solar witches, which means they work with the power of the Sun. In European magic, this shows up often as someone who works with the Wheel of the Year as ways to empower their magic, and they might prefer gold or copper or fire-colored objects. Or have an affinity for fire and solar Deities.
Moon Witchcraft and Lunar Magic
Moon witches are witches who base their magic around the phases of the Moon and do different types of spells based on what phase the Moon is in. They might also have an affinity for dream work and sometimes the ocean, and as a metal they might prefer silver over other metals.
Creative Witchcraft and Magical Arts
Another type of witch, or a type of magic that you might have an affinity for, is creative magic. And these are people who manifest their magic through arts and crafts, and sometimes their objects actually act as gates or portals that bring energy through on a continuous basis.
Land Witchcraft and Earth Magic
And then there is the land witch, or sometimes called Earth witch, and this is someone who draws their magical power and sustenance from the land itself. They are deeply rooted in the energy of place and work with the spirits of the land and nature, large and small.
Final Thoughts
Witchcraft includes all of these skills and styles and much more. You can focus on one or use many. It’s only limited by your desire to learn and the amount of time you have to pursue it. Some types of magic are safer than others, so do your research before you jump in. But often mistakes are the best way to learn, so don’t be afraid to jump in. And one thing I’ve learned is that your witchcraft will change in small ways and large.
