Witchcraft for Autumn

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn is the season when everything starts to shift from bright, sun-ruled days to a mix of light and dark, day and night. The harvest is full on, and our magic shifts as well. We work with balance, abundance, harvest, gratitude, and transition. It’s a shift between the upper, more outward, expansive time of Summer and into the more inward-focused, reflective time at the bottom half of the year. Our magic holds the powers of inner and outer work.

Autumn, Balance, and the Fall Equinox

Autumn also contains the Fall Equinox, or Mabon as it’s known in the modern Wheel of the Year, which is the time of equal day and equal night. It’s also a time to assess balance, to weigh what you have to share with community and what you need to reserve for yourself in times ahead. So what types of magic should we do through the fall season? I think that it’s a time for people to offer gratitude to the Earth and the land for what we’ve received this year.

Creating a Harvest Altar

One way to do that is to create a harvest altar. You can take produce, fruits, grains, nuts, anything that you are grateful for, and decorate it with seasonal flowers. As you do that, hold the feeling of gratitude. Let that feeling flow into a candle. Place it on the altar and let it burn. You can also just put a little bit of any food that you cook on the table as an offering, and light and charge that candle and let it burn down. You can also create that altar outdoors and add some things that birds might want, like seeds, and then just leave that food there for the animals to take.

Group Autumn Abundance Ritual

Another option I like is to take extra produce or canned goods and create an area, maybe in a local park, where people can just come and take food if it’s needed. I like to take herbs or water or flowers and make an inconspicuous circle around that food with the intention that those who need food can find it. All over the world, whenever the harvest is in various parts of the world, people get together with family, friends, and community to celebrate the harvest.

Pick a day when most of your harvest work has been done, or when you are feeling the harvest season. Invite those close to you to have a feast with you. Before it starts, pre-charge a candle with abundance and gratitude. If you want, you can create a very simple sigil for abundance and use water to draw that sigil on the table. You can also write the word abundance if it’s hard for you to draw the sigil with water. It will invisibly charge the meal.

Have a special beverage of your choice ready. Once everyone has assembled, light the candle and have glasses filled with the special beverage you prepared. Go around the circle and each person takes a sip, passes the glass to the next person, and says, “May you never hunger. May you never thirst.”

If there are concerns due to seasonal illness, you can just give everyone their own glass. One person starts and sips and then touches their glass to the next person’s glass and says, “May you never hunger,” or “May you never thirst.” Another variant on this is that everyone has a glass filled with the beverage, and then the host lights the candle and says, “May you never hunger. May you never thirst,” and takes a sip. Everyone else raises their glass and says, “May you never hunger. May you never thirst,” and takes a sip.

Magic for Restoring Balance and Justice

It’s always good to work towards a more just world. In the autumn we can call on the powers of balance and abundance to make it so. This could look like reparations work, support work, and magic to help restore balance in the world. Then follow it up with a physical action. That can be a donation, educating yourself, being an ally  or volunteering. For donation magic as you make that donation, light a candle and visualize your donation being magnified and being a beacon to draw more attention to the need.

Autumn Release and Reflection

Many people look at this season as a time to do release rituals. But if your harvest is still booming, that may not resonate for you. Often, I work with journaling to assess what is finished in my life. I notice what I do not want to carry for another round of the Wheel. I don’t necessarily release it until Samhain or at a dark moon right before Samhain.

Balancing Your Life Spell

Autumn is also a good season to do any work that you want to do around balancing your life. One way that could look is to create a small altar. It can be a very simple altar, just a small candle and maybe some black and white cloth to represent the different sides of your life that need to be balanced. Or you could create an altar that has one side be things like ripe and abundant produce, and the other half has dried flowers, seed heads, and dried leaves. As you create that altar, hold the intention of balance in your life.

For this spell, the produce side could represent anything that is more outward-focused, energetic, creative, or exciting that you need, or what you are giving to others. The dried-item side could represent anything that is more inward, quiet, nourishing, or receiving. You can even be very specific and write down exactly what you need from each side on small slips of paper and place them on your altar. You could make one side bigger if you wanted, if that seemed right to you. This is one of those cases where it’s really good to make it personal to you, checking in with what your needs are and what kind of balance between inner and outer that you want. Once you have finished setting up the altar, burn some incense and light a small candle on each side, speak your intention of needing balance, and let the candles burn all the way out.

As we move into the harvest season, may everyone be housed, safe, and fed.

Wishing you all a wonderful witchcraft journey
